Evolution of deformations in medium-mass nuclei

Evolution of quadrupole deformations in sd and pf shell nuclei with mass A= 18∼56 is studied by using deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock (HF) model with pairing correlations. We point out that the quadrupole deformations of the nuclei with the isospin T=0 and T=1 show strong mass number dependence as a clear manifestation of dynamical evolution of deformation in nuclear many-body systems. The competi...

Non-axial Octupole Deformations of N = Z Nuclei in A ∼ 60 − 80 Mass Region ∗

By performing a fully three dimensional Hartree-Fock calculation with use of the Skyrm forces, we demonstrate possibility of exotic deformations violating both the reflection and the axial symmetries of N = Z nuclei in A ∼ 60 − 80 mass region. The Y32 tetrahedral shape predicted in excited Zr arises from a shell gap at N,Z = 40 which is enhanced for the tetrahedron deformation. Softness toward ...

Triangular and tetrahedral spectral elements

In this paper we present a new unstructured spectral element method for use on triangular and tetrahedral subdomains. The algorithm maintains the accuracy and efficiency of standard quadrilateral/hexahedral spectral element methods but offers greater adaptivity. Standard unstructured meshes can be used and the order of the polynomial expansion can be varied within each triangular/tetrahedral su...

We study static non-axial octupole deformations in proton-rich Z = N nuclei, Ge, Se, Kr, Sr, Zr and Mo, by using the Skyrme Hartree-Fock plus BCS calculation with no restrictions on the nuclear shape. The calculation predicts that the oblate ground state in Se is extremely soft for the Y33 triangular deformation, and that in Zr the low-lying local minimum state coexisting with the prolate groun...

Nuclei with Tetrahedral Symmetry

Received Revised We discuss a point-group-theory based method of searching for new regions of nuclear stability. We illustrate the related strategy with realistic calculations employing the tetrahedral and the octahedral point groups. In particular, several nuclei in the Rare Earth region appear as excellent candidates to study the new mechanism.
